The maker behind Aspen Stone

MeetGreg Martodam

Greg creates Aspen Stone's handcrafted furniture in Calgary, bringing natural wood and stone together in pieces that are as individual as the materials themselves.

A branch with an unexpected bend. A stone with an edge worth keeping. His work begins with these small discoveries and takes shape by hand, finding a balance between everyday usefulness and sculptural character.

Greg Martodam in his workshop, surrounded by natural wood pieces

Aspen branches carry the shape of their growth: a turn, a taper, a fork in an unexpected place. Stone has its own colour, layers, and texture. These are the qualities that give a piece its starting point, long before the first joint is made.

Making the furniture means finding a balance between what the material offers and what the piece needs to do. A surface should be useful. A frame should feel resolved. The natural shape stays part of the conversation throughout.

The result is something you can use every day and still pause to look at. No two pieces arrive at quite the same answer. Their differences are what make the work personal, and what give each finished piece a story of its own.

Handcrafted construction

Thoughtful fitting and finishing bring separate materials together into one complete piece.

Natural irregularity

A bend, an uneven edge, or a change in grain can be the most compelling part of the design.

Functional sculpture

Made to hold a book, frame an object, or gather around. Made to be enjoyed along the way.
